A provocative hypothesis is that walking may affect autobiographical memory construction and recall. The ‘default-mode’ of brain activity occupies 40% of our walking hours and involves mental time travel – coursing backwards and forwards through both the ‘big picture’ and the details of our lives, allowing us to construct personal autobiographical narratives.
